Beach days

As you can imagine, the pace of life here in Puerto Escondido is much more relaxed than the pace of our life in Mexico City. So far our most complicated decisions have to do with whether to go to the beach or the pool first. This slower pace has afforded us the opportunity to meet more fellow travelers and Davis, especially, is happy to be making friends (of all ages). Most of the people in our hotel are older and without kids, although we’ve also seen a few families. We’ve met Americans, Canadians and even a group of Swedes. It’s fun to hear other people’s stories.

On Wednesday after picking up some supplies (sand toys and goggles) we checked out Playa Manzanillo, situated on a beautiful little cove. The cove offers a lot more protection than Playa Marinero and there are hardly any waves, making it a great place to swim. The cove is also home to numerous fish, and we were all able to see them. Davis and I, and then Isa and I, swam out along the rocks on the right-hand side and saw schools of fish, large fish, small fish, yellow, blue silver and black fish. It was really fun.

Yesterday we went out for breakfast (most days we pick up coffee and pan dulce – Mexican sweet bread – and eat on our little patio). I’ve had huevos divorciados (divorced eggs) a couple of times on our trip and I really recommend them. Two eggs are fried and each placed on a tortilla, then one is covered in red sauce and one in green sauce. They are served with beans. Yum!
After breakfast we walked back along Playa Zicatela and watched the surfers. Playa Zicatela has large, crashing waves making it probably the best place to surf in Mexico, and is a spectacular long, white beach. It is beautiful but swimming here is not a good idea due to the undercurrent.

Next we headed to a turtle, iguana and crocodile sanctuary just a few miles up the road. We actually missed the sanctuary at first and ended up driving out to where Rio Colotepec meets the ocean. There was a large sand spit between the river and ocean, creating a marvelous habitat for many birds. We saw pelicans, ibis and many, many other species that I couldn’t identify. It was quite a gem of a place.

We ended the day enjoying a beautiful sunset.
