Puerto Escondido

On Monday we were up bright and early (for us, anyway) and on the road to Puerto Escondido by 9 a.m. This road wasn’t nearly as good as the roads we’ve been on. We drove through many, many small villages and in each village we had to slow down for multiple topes (speed bumps). The villages had all kinds of animals – some running freely, such as pigs, dogs and chickens, and some fenced in or tied up, such as horses, donkeys, goats and cows. We also saw a lot of trash along the roadway, as well as signs discouraging throwing trash on the highway.

We made one stop during our seven-hour drive: lunch. We found a place on the side of the road once we made it into the state of Oaxaca, and it was delicious. Most impressive were the tortillas. A woman was patting masa into tortillas and frying them up right in the front of the restaurant. This is not the first time we’ve had such fresh tortillas (in Mexico City we had the same experience) and I’m afraid I’m spoiled forever.

We arrived at our hotel in the late afternoon and went for a swim. We are staying in a bungalow, which has a living area, kitchenette and a bedroom. We also have a nice porch with a dining table and chairs. Very comfortable.

We’ve only explored a little bit of this coastline so far, but we already love Puerto Escondido. It is much smaller and more intimate than Acapulco, but still has plenty of amenities. The beaches are just beautiful. It is exactly what we were hoping it would be.

Yesterday we checked out Playa Marinero. The surf here is relatively strong, and in fact, this area is known for its surfing. The water is beautiful and warm. We had a wonderful day swimming, playing and relaxing.

  3. Thanks, Amy!! You are so sweet! Love, love, love the new camera. In fact, all the pics in that collage were taken as I leaned out the window of a driving car. And they aren't blurry! Can you believe it? And I'll have to check out Market Place. There used to be a place in Bothell with fresh tortillas but they wen't out of business.
